This literature review article explores the impact of social media use driven by artificial intelligence algorithms on adolescents' self-esteem and identity development. Adolescence is a critical period marked by the formation of self-concept and the pursuit of social belonging, during which young people are increasingly exposed to digital environments that influence their emotions, behaviors, and perceptions through personalized content. The review includes recent studies from indexed databases such as Scopus, SciELO, and Latindex, incorporating psychological, sociological, and technological approaches. Findings reveal that constant exposure to idealized standards of beauty, success, and popularity may result in internal conflicts, lower self-esteem, and a perceived need to conform to unrealistic expectations. However, social media also offers opportunities for self-expression, social skills development, and youth empowerment when usage is guided and critical. The article concludes with recommendations for educators, families, and policymakers aimed at fostering digital literacy, emotional support, and the creation of safer digital spaces. An integrated approach is emphasized, one that balances technological ethics with the mental health of adolescents
